• Depression
• Mental illness
• Poor internal and social supports
• A history of loss or trauma
• Rigid black and white thinking
• Previous violence or threats of violence
• Current threats of violence that include a plan and opportunity
• A "nothing to lose" life view
• Relentless rage and/or jealousy
• Focus on controlling others
• Desire for revenge
• Poor capacity to consider or understand others needs
• Children may be seen as possessions
• Deep despair/despondency over finances or loss of jobs, homes
• Alcohol and/or drug use
Recent breakup/loss of an intimate relationship
Potentially losing an intimate relationship, such as caretakers of
terminally ill spouses or child custody issues
• Men are less likely to seek help/counseling
These are just some risk factors, any, all, or even none may apply-each
situation is individual. These have been found to be definite factors in varied
murder-suicide events.
